Don’t use sex addiction as a way to cope with your stress and don’t blame others for your sex addiction.

Root causes of sexual addiction include:

1. Psychological and emotional disorders such as paranoia
2. Personality disorders such as schizophrenia
3. Childhood trauma such as rape
4. Stress and escapism from problems
5. Obsessive-compulsive disorder
6. Neurological disorders such as epilepsy
7. Hereditary. One study found that 80% of recovering sex addicts reported some type of addiction in their family’s origin.
8. Biochemical abnormality. The brain tells the sex addict that having illicit sex is good the same way it tells over-eaters that over eating is good.
9. Abusing power and feeding the ego to control others sexually
10. Dependent personality disorder
11. Narcissistic personality Disorder
12. Impulse control disorder

There are three-stage progressions in becoming addicted:

1. In the first stage, the person actually believes that his or her addiction is healthy, normal and pleasurable.
2. In the second stage, the person has conflicting thoughts about whether or not the addiction is healthy, normal and pleasurable.
3. In the third stage, the person realizes that they are addicted and feels unhealthy, abnormal and more pain than pleasure, yet he or she maintains and feeds the addiction.

Sufferers can destroy their lives by cheating, getting arrested for public nudity, losing your job because of inappropriate behavior, or having to deal with a major health crisis due to unsafe sex.

There are various treatments to help people with sex addiction, including psychotherapy, 12 Steps program, Project Know, SAA, Smart Recovery, ACA and religious intervention. All of these methods are legitimate and have worked for many people, but not for everyone. Each person is unique and needs to follow a custom plan of action to help them overcome their sexual addiction.

2. You’re wasting time.

It’s time to take that trip. Apply for that job. Try dating someone different. By idling around, investing your precious energy into something that is going nowhere, you’re actually hindering yourself from growing and evolving.

Get on with your bad self. It’s time to somersault into the next stage of life and enjoy all the new adventures that await you.

The grieving process is a normal phase of life. Just as there’s a time for joy and summer, there’s also a time for sadness and winter. Without the bad, there could not be good, and that’s just the natural flow of life.

Trying to stuff your breakup recovery with destructive things to ease suffering in the short-term, may actually only drag the grieving process on longer than it needs to be.

3. Someone’s heart will take a beating.

If you decide to go for it, there’s likely going to come a time when one of you is ready to move on. It probably won’t hurt the same way it did when things first dissolved, but it’s still probably going to suck. You already went through that pain once, why would you want to risk going through it again (and possibly again and again and again)?

I’m a firm believer in doing things that make the heart feel good first, before making the genitals feel good. Your sex parts can be satiated via sex toys.

4. You risk tarnishing something beautiful.

This might sound painfully corny to some people, but if you ended things on good terms with your ex, by dragging it on in this way, you risk debasing that part of history you shared with another being. Not to mention, you might end up losing a friendship.

What I’m about to tell you may be the most important piece of information you come to accept about your sexual relationship, and something any couple could benefit from understanding: In every relationship, one of you wants sex more than the other.

When it comes to sex, high desire/low desire can also be about who wants it to last longer, or the various types of sex you have.

The truth is, the low desire partner always controls the sex in the relationship. A low desire partner may want sex 2 times a month while a high desire partner wants it at least once a week, or they may want it one time a week while the high desire partner wants it every day. Even if you disagree with everything I’ve blabbered on about, I do believe there’s one thing we can all agree on: better sex won’t hurt the relationship. I have an embarrassing confession…

I had to look up a lot of these terms. I’m a self-proclaimed “dating guru,” but the kids these days are inventing all kinds of trendy terms, and it’s hard to keep up.

1. Ghosting

Things are going pretty great between yourself and your boo. You’ve gone on a few dates; you talk into the early hours, maybe you’ve even had sex. And then, all of a sudden and without any warning, your supposed boo stops responding to your texts. Or your calls. Or your 47 voicemails.

This is what happens when you get ghosted. Your boo turned into Boo from Mario (a ghost). They vanish without explanation, and you’re left to wonder where things went wrong.

2. Sexting

Without cell phones, this wonderful phrase could never have been invented and enjoyed by naughty people everywhere. Sexting occurs when you text sexy messages over your phone. It doesn’t matter how near or far you are from your romantic partner; you can still have sexy times.

3. Friendzone
