The most common question I get from people is: why? Why on earth did you quit drinking? Well, I can tell you it wasn’t to become a better lover. The idea of such a thing wasn’t even on my mind.

When I quit back in 2012, everything changed. My friends, my passions, my health, my mood, my sex life. I have near become the antithesis of who I was and I mean this in a good way. I truly evolved for the better. And so, although I tell people I retired from drinking to become healthier, the abundance of other positive benefits are what keep me from going back.

The following transformations I experienced won’t apply to everyone. Each person reacts to alcohol differently, and to be quite honest, it affected me more than the typical drinker (I also consumed more than the typical drinker). So all I can do is tell you how things changed for me—specifically in the bedroom:

1. Bottle Down, Penis Up

Whisky dick is a real thing. Alcohol can cause both short-term and long-term erectile dysfunction.

I’m not ashamed to admit that I really struggled with getting and keeping an erection, even in my early twenties. This plight of the penis all changed for me drastically when I became sober. Hey, the little dude can still be temperamental from time to time, but he is far more reliable today than he was when we were on the sauce.

2. Increased Sex Drive

Although alcohol can make people a little more frisky, the long-term effects can really drown those desires away.

In every relationship I had during my sloshed years, I could never come close to keeping up with the carnal appetites of my partners. Sometimes I think back to all the wild sex I missed out on. I should’ve been in the physical prime of my life, and I was too hungover, not in the mood, or just so wasted that sex was the last thing on my mind. Today, my sex drive has increased substantially, to the point one could almost consider it a nuisance.

3. Better Control Over Climax

Alcohol is often used as a self-medication to combat premature ejaculation. But when you last so long that your lover is looking at their watch, it could put a strain on things. And to put it selfishly, you’ll end up having less orgasms.

On the flipside, alcohol consumption can lead to premature ejaculation. It really depends on the person. All I know is that once I ended my love affair with the hooch, I had better control over when I’d finish.

4. Wiser Sexual Decisions

I won’t divulge some of the sloppy sexual escapades I may or may not have partook in during my many liquor-fueled misadventures. But based on studies, alcohol is a factor in 50% of unplanned sexual encounters. So although cheating on your partner or hooking up with your best friend’s mom might sound bad enough, there’s also a higher risk of catching an STD. That’s because 60% of STDs are transmitted when alcohol joins the party.

In conclusion, when you take the above transformations into consideration, they all add up to one thing: better sex. Now that I’ve healed from everything I put my body through, the sex is more frequent and so are the orgasms.

So whatever the reasons may be for becoming sober, an increased quantity and quality of sex is just one more thing you can add to the pros list. Not to mention, you’ll also have more money for CBD lube and sex toys!

4. Adolescents are having less sex. Data from the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System found that 59% of high school students are still virgins. That’s a 13% decline since 1991. Way to go!

5. Four-year educations are linked to having more partners. On average, those with bachelor’s degrees have three more sex partners during their lives than those with other degrees. They’re also three-times more likely to desire a polyamorous lifestyle. So stay in school, but not for too long!

6. Nearly 70% are turned on by the idea of having sex in public. On a list of “kinky” acts people have tried, or would like to try, is public sex at 69.4%. But males mostly account for this thrill of the danger of getting caught. Women are more into bondage. Spanking ultimately tops the aforementioned list.

11. The average duration of sexual intercourse is 7.3 minutes. Relax, it’s not just you. And those guys, like me, who brag that they can go for hours are either lying or doing it all wrong. If it takes hours to get it done for both partners, sex can verge on becoming a burden, not a joy. Foreplay is where it’s at, man, and averages 20 minutes per encounter.

12. A taboo place we love to have sex is on the rise. That’s right, anal sex has grown in popularity (I hope y’all are using lots of lube). Internet smut-masters PornHub released data indicating that people were searching for anal sex videos 120% more than they were prior to 2009. A survey of 3,000 sexually-active millennials last year yielded evidence that 35% of females had at least tried it, overshadowing the 15% of men who’ve done more than just search for videos on the net.
